Chinese and Japanese art has a long tradition of bird-and-flower painting. Traditionally associated with the seasons, symbolism, and human virtues, I think of it more broadly as a celebration of the living spirit expressed through the physical world.

This work is my own interpretation of that tradition, expressing the forces of life reaching outward to realize their potential. As I photographed the image, I was thinking about how strong and alive this little weed is, using the resources at his disposal to thrive in his own way, on his own terms. In my mind, he expresses what we might discover when we see beyond our habitual perceptions to apprehend what we really are.

Using pewter leaf as the base material adds an element of uncertainty that reflects the constantly shifting nature of our reality. Pewter leaf has a naturally variegated surface, with different patinas emerging across the metal. To me, it suggests endless flows of time, the ceaseless change of mujōkan at the heart of Japanese aesthetics, and the beauty of impermanence.

This is an intimately scaled version of the image, suited to a narrow space in a study, hallway, or entryway.

When first unrolled, some curvature may remain. This will gradually flatten with time, or scroll weights may be used if desired.
