In Chinese and Japanese art, there is a long tradition known as “bird-and-flower painting.” Although traditionally associated with the seasons, symbolism, and human virtues, I think of it more broadly as a celebration of the living spirit expressed through the physical world.
This work is my own interpretation of that tradition, expressing the forces of life reaching outward to realize their potential. UV printing onto brilliantly reflective silver leaf creates a rich layering of textures and reflections, reminding me of light dancing on water—which, in my mind, becomes a metaphor for the human spirit moving through the cosmos.
This is an intimately scaled version of the image, suited to a narrow space in a study, hallway, or entryway.
