Chinese and Japanese art have a long tradition of bird-and-flower painting. Traditionally associated with the seasons, symbolism, and human virtues, I think of it more broadly as a celebration of the living spirit expressed through the physical world.

This work is my own interpretation of that tradition, expressing the forces of life reaching outward to realize their potential. As I photographed the image, I was thinking about Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and the question of what reality comes into view when we finally see beyond our habitual perceptions to apprehend what we really are.

When the image was printed, the insubstantial shadow was paradoxically rendered in physical form, as ink, while the physical bamboo branch itself was rendered simply in light by leaving the brass leaf exposed.

When first unrolled, some curvature may remain. This will gradually flatten with time, or scroll weights may be used if desired.
