In Chinese and Japanese art, there is a long tradition known as “bird-and-flower painting.” Although traditionally associated with the seasons, symbolic meanings, and human virtues, I think it can be understood more broadly as a celebration of the beautiful spirit of life as we experience it in the physical world.
This work is an example of my own interpretation of the bird-and-flower tradition, expressing the forces of life reaching outward to realize their potential. The piece also uses a double-layered technique in which two sheets of semi-transparent Japanese washi are printed with the same image and slightly offset within the scroll. This creates a subtle tension in the visual field, bringing out greater depth and energy in the subject.
