In Chinese and Japanese art, there is a long tradition known as “bird-and-flower painting.” Although traditionally associated with the seasons, symbolic meanings, and human virtues, I think it can be understood more broadly as a celebration of the beautiful spirit of life as we experience it in the physical world.
This work is an example of my own interpretation of the bird-and-flower tradition, expressing the forces of life reaching outward to realize their potential. The piece also uses a double-layered technique in which two sheets of semi-transparent Japanese washi paper are printed with the same image and slightly offset within the scroll. This creates a subtle tension in the visual field, bringing out greater depth and energy in the subject.

Take care not to twist the scroll when rolling or unrolling it.
When first unrolled, some curvature may remain. This will gradually flatten with time, or scroll weights may be used if desired.
