Chinese and Japanese art has a long tradition of monochromatic sumi-e ink painting depicting landscapes and scenes from nature. These landscapes are often understood as journeys through the human mind, the kokoro. The aim of these journeys is to cultivate the kokoro toward its most complete form.

This work is a mitate interpretation of that tradition, creating an image evocative of a spiritual landscape from a fleeting real-life moment captured through my camera lens. As I photographed these shadows dancing against a wall, I was also thinking about Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and the question of what reality comes into view when we finally see beyond our habitual perceptions to apprehend what we really are.

This medium-scale piece is executed on silver leaf, the most reflective of the metallic media I use. I enjoy the interplay of light and dark, reflection and absorption.
